Your net worth snapshot

Net worth is a snapshot, not a verdict — it naturally shifts with market values, home prices, and life stage. What matters most is the trend over time, not any single number.

What net worth actually tells you (and what it doesn’t)

Net worth is everything you own minus everything you owe, at this exact moment. It’s a snapshot, not a verdict — a homeowner with a big mortgage can have a lower net worth than a renter with no debt, and that doesn’t mean the renter is doing “better.” What matters is the trend over time, tracked consistently, not any single number in isolation.

How to use this calculator well

Use current market value for assets, not what you paid — a home bought for $300k that’s now worth $380k should be entered at $380k. For liabilities, use your current outstanding balance, not your original loan amount. Recalculate this every 3-6 months using the same method each time, so the trend is actually comparable.

Common mistakes

  • Using purchase price instead of current value for homes, vehicles, or investments — this can significantly under- or overstate reality.
  • Forgetting smaller liabilities — a $2,000 credit card balance still counts.
  • Comparing your net worth to someone else’s without accounting for age, income history, or life circumstances — net worth is highly personal and non-comparable across different life stages.

FAQ

Is a negative net worth bad? It’s common and often expected early in life — student loans plus a fresh mortgage frequently put people below zero for a while. What matters is the direction it’s moving.

How often should I check this? Quarterly is plenty for most people. Checking monthly often just adds anxiety without adding useful signal, since asset values fluctuate short-term.
